Packaging Re-design

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

Last week, I worked on re-designing the packaging for Blue Riband biscuits. Our assignment was to re-design any food packaging we felt we could improve upon.

I chose Blue Riband because I loved these biscuits as a child, and I also felt that the packaging and logotype needed modernising.

I was originally going to redesign the packaging using its original plastic packaging shape, however, I then decided to go with a completely different design. After researching the origin of the name Blue Riband, I found out that it was a sailing award. I decided to research different nautical symbols as reference points, and also research innovative packaging designs for an array of products. I came to the decision to create a life ring shaped box for the packaging, inspired by some of the nautical symbols and items I researched.

Here is my work in progress design for the new packaging:

I decided to create a life-ring shaped box with a hollow middle. The design is quite plain at the moment, but I have created two different looks for the front of the packaging. On the bottom left, there is an image of how the box would open.

Final Design

My final design for my Blue Ribband packaging features a ribbon embossing in the background of the box. I've added the amount of biscuits onto the box too. I am really happy with this final result.

This box could be tin or strong cardboard. I feel that this packaging could need plastic wrapping as a seal, but it would be good to explore environmentally friendly wrapping options.

As a further step, I could design the packaging for the individual biscuits, and design the back of the packaging too. Maybe, I could add decorations, like a ribbon. Overall, I am really happy with what I've produced.
