Music Project: Designing for Printmaking

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Today, I used Lino to carve a portrait of the lead singer/frontman of my chosen band for this project, Cody Carson of Set It Off.

Here's my finished etch, crested using a printed image, tracing paper, pencil, a marker pen and etching tools:

You will notice one image with four different versions of my pencil drawing of Cody; they show my drawing progression. I initially began by drawing his face freehand, but soon realised I wasn't getting the shape quite right, and that's important for a realistic lino print. So, using a light box, I decided to trace over my printed image of Cody and get the right proportions that way. Then, I transferred the traced lines by laying my trace over the lino print, and etching my lines using a pencil. Once I had those faint lines on the lino cut, I coloured the parts I was going to keep in black marker, and any blank areas inside my outline were going to be etched.

Artist Research: Linocut Printmaker, Andrew Campe Artwork

Andrew Campe is an artist and linocut printmaker, based in Maidenhead, UK. He creates handmade portraits and images using oil based inks. According to an interview with stellabox.co.uk, Campe explained that he started printmaking in 2007 during his illustration degree. He picked it up again later, after being inspired by other artists on Instagram. His fascination with portraiture and nature inspired him to create work based on people and animals. Having begun etching by hand, Campe now prints using a Portable Printing Press. Aside from printmaking, he works full time for a company in broadcasting and creates his prints around work on his dining room table.
