Music Project: Lino Printing

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

After we finished carving our designs onto lino print, we began printing our designs onto different types of paper. We used large printing presses to help us along the way!

The Process

Before After

  1. I rolled ink onto my lino print

  2. I went over to the printing press and laid my lino print down underneath a piece of paper

  3. We put thick paper on top to protect the page

  4. My teacher pulled the handle to press the ink from the lino to the page

  5. She opened up the paper insert and peeled off my design

  6. I put my design on the drying rack

After my first few prints, I realised that my etch was jagged, and small bumps were being printed in areas that were supposed to be blank. So, I cleaned off my lino and went back to etching to fix those small details. The new prints came out really well, and I am very pleased with the result!

Last Print

Something I forgot to take into account whilst designing was that my print would be in reverse to the design I had etched. This doesn't matter for my portrait, but this is certainly something to remember when I next create a print!

The final thing I would like to perfect is my placement of the paper in the printing press, as a couple of prints came out on an angle on the page. With time and practice, I'm sure I'll get better at this.

The design overall has lots of chatter (background print), which was a desicion I made becasue I felt it added to the drama of the print. It also lets the hair and his shirt blend into the background like they did in the original photograph.
