Today, we learnt about logos: what a logo is, what makes an effective logo, and the five principles of an effective logo. We used resources and information from teachrock.org to learn about logos, and logos in music (lesson linked below)
What is a Logo?
A logo is a symbol/graphic that represents a business's product or service. It has no inherent meaning, but through brand association, a logo becomes recognisable and attains meaning. According to Teach Rock, "a logo identifies" and "conveys meaning."
The Five Principles
Simple: is it clear and straightforward?
Memorable: is it unique? Is it understandable? Can people relate to it, or, does it have connotations of something relevant?
Timeless: does it continue to stay an effective and aesthetically pleasing logo despite design trends?
Versatile: can it be scaled and remain legible and effective? Can parts of the logo be removed and it still remain recognisable?
Appropriate: Is it relevant to the brand? Can it show the purpose/service of, and/or identify the brand?
Our Task
In groups, we looked at six band logos, each different in era, design, and music genre. We analysed each logo with the criterion above.
Here are our thoughts:

We also drew some conclusions about a few of the other logos:
Phish: By putting their band name into the shape of a fish, you can infer what the logo is referring to, even if the text is hard to read. The design was very kitsch, so we didn't think that it stood the test of time. That, paired with the confusing lettering, we felt the logo was memorable. The text really makes you stop and look to read it.
Black Flag, we thought, had a very simple logo; the rectangles gave the idea of a waving flag. It’s probably not all to memorable, but it’s versatile in that the text or symbol can be scaled down and/or removed.
Final Task
To finish, we were asked to design a logo for our chosen band using the knowledge we learnt from the lesson. I drew some rough initial sketches to start with. Once I have decided on a logo, I have been tasked to create it digitally next week. Watch this space for the final result!
